what IS A SWEET LAND FARM EGG SHARE? Egg shares receive 1 dozen eggs each week at $4 per dozen. The season cost is $104 (26 weeks). You may buy as many egg shares as you need. If you miss a pick up, you may get the eggs at the next pick up. Egg shares can be purchased through the farm website, or when you sign up using the SL brochure. IF YOU ARE THINKING about what goes into making your breakfast egg, here are some handy insights into common egg marketing phrases: “Cage Free” or “Barn-Raised” – means just that, chickens are kept in a huge building, crowded together, with NO access to the out of doors. The pictures of cage free barns that can be found online are sobering and an enlightening contrast to the mental images that may be evoked by the un-educated image of “cage free” hens. The amount of fecal matter and ammonia in the air in these barns is disgusting and suffocating – I’ve been in them. Our chickens are outside every day and their housing is an airy, bottomless greenhouse. “Access to the outdoors” – this often means that a lot of birds are kept in a big building with a 1-foot by 1-foot door to the outside – usually a very small enclosed area that may or may not include pasture. The logistics of that many birds getting though the door make the chances good that the birds never go outside. Usually in this system the building is stationary and the chicken yard resembles pavement after a couple of days. The outdoor area is almost certainly not rotated. “Fed only vegetarian feed” – chickens, by nature, are omnivores. Our chickens love chasing and eating bugs and worms all day long. Remember, the egg producers can put any images they want on the egg crate, and they will certainly advertise anything beneficial that they are actually doing because it is more expensive to the producer to raise chickens well. Our eggs are $4/dozen, or 33 cents an egg. No matter how you look at it, an extremely healthy 2 egg breakfast for 66 cents is a really good deal and AFFORDABLE. |
